Question

What should I consider when designing text for foil printing to avoid misprints?

Answer

Foil is stamped through a metal die, so text has to be big and solid enough for the die to grip cleanly. Thin or tiny lettering is where foil misprints most often show up.

  • Keep type large and bold, since heavier weights hold foil far better than light or condensed fonts.
  • Avoid hairline strokes and very small point sizes, which can break up or fill in.
  • Give letters a little breathing room so adjacent strokes do not bridge together.
  • If a design needs fine detail, increase the size and weight or simplify it before committing to foil.
