What is a safety margin or safe area for my design?

A safety margin, also called the safe area, is the buffer inside the trim where you keep anything important. It protects text and logos from being clipped if the cut shifts slightly during trimming or finishing.

• What to keep inside: text, logos, page numbers, and any element you cannot afford to lose.
• Why it exists: production tolerances mean the blade can move a hair in either direction.
• How much: guidelines vary by product, so follow the template for your specific item.

When you upload your files, the proof shows the safe area outline, and you can flag any concerns in the feedback section during proof review to have the margins double-checked.

A typical safety margin is 0.125" to 0.25" in from the trim line, with 0.125" as the minimum on every side. Pair it with 0.125" of bleed on any background or photo that runs to the edge, so no white shows after cutting. Avoid thin borders around the whole design, since a small cutting shift makes them look uneven.
