A domed 3D sticker is a printed vinyl label, cut to shape, with a drop of clear two part polyurethane resin poured on top that surface tension pulls into a lens roughly a millimetre thick. What a Domed 3D Sticker Actually Is

Strip the marketing off and a domed sticker is two ordinary things stacked. Underneath is a printed self adhesive label, usually white or clear vinyl, sometimes polycarbonate when the piece has to take abuse. On top is a clear layer of two part polyurethane resin, mixed, dispensed as a measured drop, and left to cure.

The dome is not moulded and no tool touches it. The resin is poured onto a piece that has already been cut to its final outline, it spreads until it reaches that cut edge, and then it stops. Surface tension does the shaping. The liquid pulls itself into the smoothest shape it can hold, which is a shallow lens, and it holds that shape while it hardens. Nothing presses it, which is why the top is optically clear rather than textured.

That sequence explains the two things people find surprising about ordering them. The artwork has to be printed and cut before doming starts, so the print job and the doming job are separate steps with separate lead times. And because every piece is domed individually, a run of five thousand takes five thousand pours. The Resin Dome Effect, and the Lens Nobody Warns You About

Depth on a domed sticker comes from three things happening at once. The clear layer has real thickness, so the artwork sits visibly below the surface. The curve reflects a highlight that moves as you tilt the piece. And the resin is a lens, so it magnifies whatever is underneath.

That third one is the part that catches people out. Magnification is even across the flat middle of the dome and is not, near the shoulder where the curve drops toward the edge. A logo centred in the piece looks slightly larger and richer. A line of legal text set close to the outline bends, thickens on one side, and can become genuinely hard to read. It is the same distortion you get looking through the rim of a drinking glass, at a smaller scale.

The fix is spatial, not typographic. Keep everything that has to stay legible inside the flat centre, and give the outline a margin of plain colour to itself. A designer who has done this once gets it right by instinct. A designer who has only worked on flat vinyl stickers will fill the artboard to the trim line, because on a flat print that is exactly what you should do.

Durability, Sun, and What Actually Fails First

A domed sticker is tough in a specific way. The ink is sealed under a millimetre of hard plastic, so nothing abrades it, no solvent reaches it, and washing it changes nothing. Scuffs land in the clear layer above the print instead of in the print, which is why a domed badge on a toolbox still reads perfectly after a year of being knocked about.

Heat is the quiet limit. The resin softens well before the vinyl underneath does, so a domed piece must never go through a laminator, a heat press, or an oven, and anything pressing on it while it is hot in direct sun can leave a mark. Where a Dome Is Worth the Money

A dome earns its price where the piece is small, permanent, and touched. Equipment nameplates and serial plates are the classic case, because the dome takes the wear that would otherwise sand the print off a control panel. Vehicle emblems and dealer badges are the second, since they live outdoors on a hard flat panel and have to look like part of the product rather than like a sticker. Keychains, trophies, hard hats and instrument bezels follow the same logic.

It stops being worth it fast in three places. Anything handed out in volume, where you are buying reach rather than permanence. Anything applied to a soft, flexible or tightly curved surface. And anything where a different effect would actually read better from a distance, which is more often the case than people admit. Shapes and Sizes a Dome Will Hold

The cut outline is the mould. Resin runs until it finds an edge and then stops there, so the shape you cut is the shape the dome takes, and some shapes cannot hold a pour.

  • Circles, ovals and rounded rectangles. Even height corner to corner. These are what doming shops quote fastest and price best.
  • Badge and shield outlines. Fine as long as every corner carries a radius. A generous corner is what stops the resin pooling.
  • Sharp points and thin spikes. A tip narrower than the dome is tall has no edge to grip. The resin thins out and the point reads flat, so the star you designed arrives with soft tips.
  • Interior cut-outs and narrow bridges. The pour crosses the gap or drips through it. If your mark has a hole in the middle, print the hole rather than cutting it.

On size, small wins. Between roughly one and three inches across, the dome holds an even height and the cure is quick enough that little settles into it. Larger pieces need much more resin, the centre reads thicker than the rim, and every speck of dust during the cure is trapped in a wide clear window where you will see it. If you need to cover a broad area, print it flat and dome a small badge to sit next to it. Designing Artwork That Survives the Pour

Build the file the way you would for any cut sticker, then change three things for the dome.

Pull the artwork in. Leave a band of plain background between your outermost element and the cut line. That band sits under the shoulder where the lens distorts, so it should carry nothing you need read. Small type, a website address, a batch code, all of it belongs in the flat centre.

Go bolder than feels necessary. The resin adds gloss and depth, which flattens subtle contrast. Mid tone type on a mid tone background looks fine on screen and disappears under a dome. Push the contrast, thicken hairline rules, and set the smallest text a size up from where you would set it flat.

Decide what the background is doing. On white vinyl the dome deepens the colours and looks like an enamel badge. On clear stickers at $25, the dome shows whatever is behind the piece, so light artwork on a dark panel will vanish. Print a white underbase, or choose the white stock. What is a domed 3D sticker?

Are domed stickers waterproof?

The face of one is, completely. Cured polyurethane is a sealed plastic layer over the ink, so rain, washing, and most household cleaners never touch the print. What is not sealed is the underside. Water gets in at the adhesive line, not through the dome, which is why a domed sticker applied to a dusty or waxed surface can lift at one edge while the dome itself still looks new. Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol and press from the centre outward.

Why do some domed stickers turn yellow?

They were domed in epoxy rather than polyurethane. Epoxy is the cheaper resin, it pours beautifully, and under ultraviolet light it ambers within a season or two. Polyurethane costs more and is the material used for anything that lives outdoors, from vehicle emblems to machine nameplates. If a supplier will not tell you which resin they use, treat it as an indoor product.

Can a domed sticker go on a curved surface?

A gentle curve, yes. A tight or compound curve, no. The cured dome is stiff and wants to stay flat, so on a small radius the resin resists while the adhesive tries to follow the shape, and the edge levers itself off. Water bottles, helmets and rounded control panels are usually fine for a small dome. A phone camera bump or a tool handle is not. For a tight curve, a conformable printed vinyl sticker beats a dome every time.

Check the clearance before you commit to a dome, because there is no thin version of the effect.

What sizes work best for doming?

Small pieces. Badges, logos and emblems between about one and three inches across are the sweet spot, because the resin holds an even height across that span. Go much larger and the pour needs noticeably more resin, the centre reads thicker than the rim, and any dust that lands during the cure ends up locked in the middle of a large clear window.
