On most standard latex-painted walls, poster putty removes cleanly. The risk is with certain paint finishes, where it can leave a mark behind.
- Latex or eggshell paint: usually peels off with no residue.
- Flat or matte paint: can absorb the oils in putty and leave a spot.
- Test first: stick a small piece in a hidden area and remove it after a day to check.
If the test leaves any mark, switch to removable adhesive strips, which are safer on delicate matte finishes.
