Question

How many colors should I use on my letterhead?

Answer

Keep it to two or three colors at most. A clean palette reads as professional, prints more consistently, and keeps the focus on your message instead of the design. Overloading letterhead with color makes it look busy and can distract from the actual letter.

  • Primary brand color for the logo, header rule, or accent bar.
  • Black or dark gray for body text, which stays crisp and photocopies cleanly.
  • One optional accent for a footer line, icon, or divider.
  • Build colors in CMYK, not RGB, so what you approve on screen matches what prints.
  • Leave plenty of white space. The empty area is what makes the whole page feel premium.
