Question
How do I measure a canvas print for framing?
Answer
How you measure depends on the frame style, because floater and traditional frames grip the canvas differently. Getting the depth right matters as much as the width and height.
- Floater frames: measure the outer dimensions of the stretcher bars.
- Traditional frames: measure the face, meaning the visible image area of the canvas.
- Depth (both): measure the thickness of the canvas so the frame's rabbet is deep enough to hold it fully.
When in doubt, note width, height, and depth all three, and check them against the frame's stated capacity before buying.
