How much bleed should I add to my flyer design?
Answer
Add 0.125 inches (3mm) of bleed on all four sides of your flyer. Bleed is extra background that extends past the trim line so that when the stack is cut, there are no thin white slivers at the edges. Any color or image meant to run edge to edge must extend fully into that bleed zone.
- Standard bleed: 0.125" (3mm) on every side.
- Document size: an 8.5" x 11" flyer becomes 8.75" x 11.25" with bleed added.
- Extend backgrounds and edge images into the bleed so nothing trims to white.
- Keep a safety margin: hold text and logos at least 0.125" inside the trim line so nothing important gets cut.
- Confirm requirements with your printer before finalizing artwork, since a few require different amounts.
