Question
Can I use a coin to scratch off a gift card?
Answer
You can, but it is risky. A metal coin has hard edges that can cut through the printed code itself, not just the protective coating on top.
- Risk of damage: pressing too hard or slipping can scratch away the digits and leave an unreadable PIN.
- Safer tools: the flat edge of a plastic card, a coin wrapped in cloth, or a dedicated scratch tool removes the coating with far less force.
- Go slow: use light, even pressure and stop as soon as the code becomes readable.
- If it is unreadable: keep the card and any receipt, then contact the card issuer to recover or replace the code.
