Question

What file format do you need for raised finish products?

Answer

Raised finishes are added from a separate mask layer, and that mask has to be vector so the raised material follows clean, sharp edges. Raster masks blur at the edges and can lift or fill in during production.

  • Mask format: supply the raised area as vector artwork built in a vector program such as Adobe Illustrator, not a photo, flattened image, or placed JPEG or PNG.
  • Where it goes: place the mask on its own layer or artboard, in solid black, over the base design so it separates and registers cleanly.
  • Small text: keep type at 10pt minimum for regular weights and 12pt minimum for bold or thick strokes, because the raised foil expands slightly and can close up fine letters, making them hard to read.
  • Lines and details: keep strokes generous so thin elements do not drop out.

If part of your design is very detailed, keep the raised mask on the bolder elements and let the flat print carry the fine detail.
