Greeting Card Marketing

We all have memories of mom drilling us on the importance of sending grandma or Aunt Sue a thank you card after receiving a gift. By the time we become adults, this important point of etiquette is deeply engrained in our psyche. We would never consider not sending a thank-you note when appropriate.

So why do so many people leave their good manners at the door when they go to work?

An article in the Milwaukee Business Journal (article) is titled “The lost art of writing 'thank you' notes.” This is a sad statement on the state of business etiquette today.

However, it is also an opportunity. Take advantage of this small, but powerful, gesture to set yourself apart and foster strong relationships with your clients and other business VIPs. A personal, handwritten note or greeting is meaningful. It shows that you cared enough to take the time for another person.

Thank you
There are many times when it’s appropriate to say thank you.

  1. After an important meeting
  2. After a customer places her first order with your company
  3. After you’ve delivered a service
  4. After a customer gives you negative feedback (Feedback, even if it’s negative, is a gift. Don’t squander it.)
  5. After someone gives you a business referral

Beyond Thank You
Of course, there are plenty of other opportunities to send business greetings.

Holidays. Be creative. When everyone else is sending traditional winter holiday greetings, pick a different holiday. How about Thanksgiving, New Years, Chinese New Year, or Valentine’s Day, to name just a few.

Recognition. When a customer or colleague receives an award, gets promoted or is profiled in the newspaper, write him a personal note acknowledging the accomplishment.

Keep in touch. You don’t have to wait for a holiday or a special ocassion to send a greeting card to a business associate. Let others know you value their relationships.

Condolences. Unfortunately, not all recognition is for a happy events. Show you care in the good times and the bad.
